The little differences between ways to memorialize your loved one is a part of our daily work – but we understand it’s not something our customers are usually familiar with, or want to be familiar with.
So, what’s the difference between a grave marker and a monument? While the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they actually refer to different types of memorials — and knowing the difference can help you make the best choice for your loved one.
Grave markers
A grave marker is a flat or low-profile memorial that typically lies flush with the ground or is slightly raised. It marks a burial site without rising high above the earth.
Flat markers are great, because they are easy to maintain and often more affordable.
Types of grave markers include:
- Flat/grass markers: Sit level with the ground
- Bevel markers: Have a slight slope and sit a few inches above ground
- Slant markers: Upright with a slanted face, often used at the head of a grave
Monuments
A monument refers to an upright memorial, often taller and more visible than a marker. These are what many people think of as traditional headstones.
Types of monuments include:
- Upright monuments: Tall, customizable stones in various shapes and sizes
- Companion monuments: Designed for two people, often married couples
- Custom monuments: Sculpted or carved to tell a unique story
- Benches: Functional and commemorative, often placed near a grave or in a garden
While grave markers can be personalized with art and quotes, monuments offer more space, and provide greater visibility from a distance. Monuments don’t have to be individualized – they can serve as a centerpiece for family plots, location markers, etc.
In an ideal world, choosing the perfect memorial would be simple and personal. But in reality, cemetery regulations can influence what’s allowed. Some cemeteries only permit flat markers in certain sections, while others allow more flexibility.
At Dash Monument, we’re familiar with the cemetery guidelines across the Kansas City area. We’ll work with you to understand what’s permitted on your chosen plot and guide you through the available options. We’re here to help.
